The experience

Walking through nature, history, and archaeology

This excursion will let you discover one of the largest and most fascinating natural canyons in Puglia.
We will walk inside the ravine admiring the lush Mediterranean scrub among olive trees (some dating back to Roman times) and aromatic wild plants.
We will discover ancient medieval rock settlements carved into the soft walls of the ravine; these caves were used by the local population as dwellings.
We will also visit a beautiful Byzantine cave church frescoed with the palimpsest technique and an ancient pharmacy entirely carved into the rock.
After crossing the canyon and reaching its highest point, we will fully enjoy its beauty and the unspoilt natural surroundings. This is the perfect place to take the perfect photo as a souvenir of your holiday in Puglia.

Reasons for visiting the Ravine

The Riggio Ravine, located in the countryside bordering Grottaglie, is part of the Terra delle Gravine Regional Nature Park, which extends for many kilometres, creating a unique ecological and beautiful environment. In addition to the typical flora and fauna found in the ravine, the guides will tell you about the geological development of the site and its historical and archaeological importance. Fossils from the Pleistocene and Palaeolithic periods have been found here. In addition, the caves were also inhabited during the Middle Ages.
The most historically evocative find is, definitely, the rupestrian church, frescoed with palimpsests.
This is certainly one of the most beautiful natural ravines in Puglia.
You will find below a beautiful video by Salvatore Centonze showing the waterfall that appears during major rainfall, a phenomenon that unfortunately occurs very rarely. The rainwater accumulated gives life to a small lake that makes the ravine a very fascinating natural place.
