An itinerary through rural landscapes and local food and wine traditions
On our e-bikes we will leave Gioia del Colle for a fascinating rural cycling route. Along the way we will admire typical glimpses of this area of Puglia: pastures for dairy animals, vineyards for the production of the fine Apulian wines, olive groves for the cultivation of olives used for extra virgin olive oil.
From the rich and flourishing lands of the Apulian countryside, we will move to the Lucanian countryside, close to the city of Matera. The landscape here becomes more rugged and rocky as the territory’s geological characteristics differ.
We will benefit from a stop to visit a fortified farmhouse once used as a temporary shelter for shepherds and animals during transhumance.
It now houses a farm that breeds the famous Murgese horse, an indigenous breed once used for agricultural work or for carrying people and goods.
We will then continue on our bikes for a second short stop at the memorial stone stele that commemorates the place where the famous brigand Sergeant Romano was executed by the National Guard on 5 January 1863.
From the garden to the table: harvesting seasonal vegetables
The tour continues towards the estate, dating back to the early 1900s, where the cooking class dedicated to Apulian fresh pasta will take place.
The tuff used to build the Norman-Swabian castle of Gioia del Colle, the hunting lodge of Frederick II of Swabia, was extracted from this specific area.
Once arrived at our destination, it will be time to get off our bikes and get our hands in the dough!
We will first visit the organic vegetable garden where we will harvest, together with the farmer, seasonal vegetables which will then be used in the preparation of a delicious Apulian recipe.
We will then learn, together with the master pasta maker, how to make typical local fresh pasta shapes: cavatelli, orecchiette and strascinate.
Eventually, we will serve the pasta we have prepared with vegetables picked directly from the garden and enjoy a delicious Apulian dish prepared with our own hands.
After the gathering we will return to Gioia del Colle.
